Today is day 199 of 2019. The year is 55% gone today.
Tick-tock…
How much have you improved your key processes in the first half of the year?
How are your “Great Work” process improvement projects coming along?
I described Great Work and asked about what Great Work you were planning to do this year in my last newsletter of 2018, it is here:
ALL the work we do falls into one of 3 buckets (per Michael Bungay Stanier):
Bucket 1…Bad Work
All you do that’s mindless, pointless, or aimless.
Bucket 2…Good Work
This is the work that has you: busy, productive, efficient, focused.
Bucket 3…Great Work
It lights you up.
It makes a difference.
It’s the work that matters.
It connects your heart and your hands and your mind.
The problem with Good Work is that it can expand to be all of our work, leaving no time for Great Work. So, we need to deliberately plan and act to make our Great Work happen.
Great Work, from the Process Perspective, is either:
Creating a new and innovative process technology with significant and interesting commercial and financial impact.
or...
Making a dramatic step-change in the performance of an existing process.
It’s been half a year since I asked last, what has happened to YOUR projects in the meantime?
My main learning from this line of thinking is that if we do not plan our Great Work, it really cannot happen. Great Work Projects are initiated by seasoned process professionals to provide the activation energy to overcome the status quo. These bold projects will not happen on their own or without ownership and initiative.
CHALLENGE TO READERS
Please think about your recent process innovation efforts in terms of Great, Good and Bad work:
Review your 2019 first-half efforts. What is your best example of Great Work from 2019? What undone project with significant upside could be completed in the next 6-18 months?
Think about the second-half of 2019 with a fresh and clean approach. What Great Process Work could you do that would have a tremendous impact on your business? How can you generate support for and initiate this effort?
MPES Consulting is here to help you create breakthrough-level outcomes. Please contact us to discuss your Great Process Work. Email me at marty@martyschad.com, or call me at 508-410-8081.
All the Best,
