NAVIGATING Through the Fog…

The “Coronavirus Storm” continues. Some manufacturing is halted. “Critical” manufacturing operations are continuing. Last week, I discussed being a good captain in these stormy conditions. How can we navigate successfully when visibility is low and uncertainty is high? We can focus on things that are BOTH important and (at least somewhat) in our control. One thing that is both important and in our control is our relationships with our suppliers. How are your suppliers doing? While they may not be top-of-mind at this point, they are still vitally important. Do you have suppliers that are sole suppliers to your important research or manufacturing operations? What is your “Plan B’ if they cannot supply you? The time to think about that is now. Can you quickly start up alternate suppliers if needed? Do you have a plan to work with your suppliers?

My main learning from this line of thinking is how important our suppliers are to our efforts. We depend mightily on them, and they are partners in our efforts to build robust manufacturing processes. We are truly “in it together” with them.

CHALLENGE TO READERS

Please think about your suppliers, both for your research and manufacturing efforts…

  • Which suppliers are mission-critical? Do you have a plan if they are unable to supply you?

  • Are you in regular communication with your key suppliers? How can you help them?

I’d like to know how you are dealing with and helping your suppliers during these difficult times, and what approaches you have successfully used. Please know that we are here if you need us. If you email us, we will get back to you promptly. Thanks!

All the Best,

Marty
