GREAT WORK in 2019!

The end of the year is a natural and suitable time for reflection on the past year and consideration of the upcoming year. 2018 is almost complete. 2019 is ahead of us as a blank slate, with all the possibilities that entails. How should we frame this review and planning? I’d like to think of it in terms of Great, Good, and Bad work. Michael Bungay Stanier has provided a fun and usable framework for us to use.

Great, Good, and Bad work are described in the following clever 2 minute video:

ALL the work we do falls into one of 3 buckets, per Stanier:

Bucket 1…Bad Work

  • all you do that’s mindless, pointless, or aimless

Bucket 2…Good Work

  • this is the work that has you: busy, productive, efficient, focused

Bucket 3…Great Work

  • it lights you up

  • it makes a difference

  • it’s the work that matters

  • it connects your heart and your hands and your mind

The problem with Good Work is that it can expand to be all of our work, leaving no time for Great Work. So, we need to deliberately plan and act to make our Great Work happen.

Great Work, from the Process Perspective, is either:

Creating a new and innovative process technology with significant and interesting commercial and financial impact

or...

Making a dramatic step-change in the performance of an existing process

All of my best process work would be viewed as Great Work in the context we are using here. I have always wanted to do projects with large impact and drive them to completion to reap the benefits of my efforts. This approach is repeatable and very profitable, with tremendous ROIs, in excess of 50X.

YOUR CHALLENGE THIS WEEK

Please think about your process innovation efforts in terms of Great, Good and Bad work:

  • Review your 2018 efforts. What is your best example of Great Work from 2018? What undone project with significant upside could be completed in 2019?

  • Think about 2019 with a fresh and clean approach. What Great Process Work could you do that would have tremendous impact on your business? How can you generate support for and initiate this effort?
