ACTIVATION! Energy

All chemical reactions require some energy to be supplied to get started. This “law of nature” is called the Activation Energy.

Striking a match supplies the activation energy to light the match. Friction produces heat which ignites the match.

It’s the same story with building great manufacturing processes.

We need to supply the activation energy to get our projects launched. This is vital and unavoidable.

Bold projects will not happen on their own or without ownership and initiative. Motivated process professionals provide the activation energy to overcome the status quo.

Let’s think about this from the Process Perspective for a bit. What are some guideposts along this road?

These SUPPLY Activation Energy...

  • Enthusiasm and advocacy from the project initiator.

  • Learning by doing and generating fresh data, not by talking.

  • Envisioning solutions to chronic problems.

  • Systems, such as Project Initiation Sheets, to focus project definition and key milestones.

These CONSUME Activation Energy...

  • Seeking perfection instead of progress.

  • Nitpicking…beware!...nitpicking is usually a sign of cluelessness!

  • Negativity, such as “we have tried that before”, “that will never work”, etc.

  • More spectators/onlookers than actual players.

My main learning from this line of thinking is the power of getting projects off to a sound launch. This approach works very well because the stakeholders are involved in the project definition, and they become committed to the success of the project. A smooth project launch is not an accident, and it should be the normal approach used and refined over time.

CHALLENGE TO READERS

Please think about bold process-centric efforts moving FORWARD…

  • Think about next year, 2020, with a fresh and clean approach. What Great Process Work could you do that would have a tremendous impact on your business?

  • How can you generate support for and initiate this effort? Be specific, and gauge support for your ideas by talking and brainstorming with prospective stakeholders.

How do you and your organization routinely generate highly productive process engineering projects? I’d love to chat about it with you (508-410-8081) to discuss how MPES can help you dramatically accelerate your progress and profits.

If you email me I’ll get back to you promptly, thanks.

All the Best,

Marty
